Car Brakes - Norwich

Squealing, grinding, or a brake pedal that feels different underfoot are all signs your brakes need attention and in most cases this means new pads, but sometimes discs, calipers or brake fluid are involved too. At GC Motor Group, we check the whole braking system before recommending any work, so you only pay for what’s actually needed.

What the noises and warning signs mean

  • A high-pitched squeal usually means the pads have worn down and are due for replacement
  • A grinding sound often means the pads have worn through completely, and the discs may already be damaged
  • The car pulling to one side can point to an uneven caliper, a sticking brake, or wear on one side only
  • A spongy or unusually firm pedal may indicate air in the brake lines or a fault with the fluid
  • Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel is often caused by warped or worn discs
  • Stopping distances feeling longer than usual shouldn’t be ignored, even if there’s no obvious noise

Why brakes wear faster for some drivers

Town driving, heavy braking, towing, and carrying extra weight all put more strain on brake pads and discs than steady motorway driving. Corrosion is also a factor, particularly on cars left standing for long periods or that are regularly driven in wet weather, and it can affect discs and calipers even when the pads themselves still have plenty of life left.

How we approach a brake repair

Rather than automatically replacing everything, we check pads, discs, calipers and fluid together and only replace what’s genuinely worn as pads alone are sometimes enough. In other cases, discs need replacing too, particularly if they’ve worn thin or developed scoring. We also recommend new brake fluid periodically as well, since it absorbs moisture over time and becomes less effective at higher temperatures.
